Almly,
sorry I didn't see your post sooner, but you got all good answers from my SD breathren. 3-Peet....I'm an Aztec alum too ('92).
I would not play 10k in Caliente... I would not play 1k in Caliente. If I'm going to bet 10k I'd go to Vegas and make a "players" week-end of it. I wouldn't even go to TJ with 1k in my pocket because even the phucking cops will steal from you. (A guy just got robbed by cops coming back from caliente, if I find the link from the local rag I'll post it)
I used to go down there every weekend but I have not been to Caliente in ten years. I will say I loved going down there Saturday mornings, hung-over, ordering the best chorizo and eggs in the world, and watching games with other college football fans. Caliente is clean, has a couple of good rooms, and I've never heard of anyone getting stiffed down there, but I do know if it is a big bet you could get paid (slowly) in 20's. It is not that far of a walk (15 minutes), and you will definitely get ac**** the border faster than driving.
Back when I was going to Caliente I was in college (or just out) so $100 was a big bet back then. Even so, I always felt like I was dealing with the Mexican Mafia.
I'd go down again for the chorizo, but the most I'll bet down there is $100 and the most I'd carry on me is $500.
If you have never been, you should at least go check it out for yourself. You will not have any problems if you watch your back, and even better if you speak spanish (or have a spanish speaking friend).
